Sunghyun Lee is Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Psychology at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana, and an ordained minister in the Korean Methodist Church. As an active preacher, she is frequently invited to speak at diverse congregations and academic gatherings. Professor Lee’s interdisciplinary research spans pastoral care, affect theory, psychoanalysis, feminist social ethics, intercultural studies, and postcolonial studies. Her work focuses on the moral use of mature empathy as a resource for social activism, spiritual growth, and daily justice-seeking within faith communities—particularly to empower marginalized groups, including immigrants, racial minorities, and survivors of sexual trauma. Beyond her academic and pastoral roles, Professor Lee serves on the Steering Committee for the Women of Color Unit at the American Academy of Religion (AAR), as a board member for the FSR Collaboratory, and as a guest editor for the Asian American Theological Forum (AATF). She is the author of The Power of Mature Empathy: In Response to Sexual Violence in Faith Communities (Pickwick, 2025) and co-author of Self (2009). She is currently working on her upcoming book, The Ashes We Stand On: Korean Women, Spirit, and the Fragile Ground of Academia (Wipf and Stock, forthcoming 2027).
