Scholar-in-Residence
Calvin Theological Seminary

Gil grew up in a Buddhist family in Korea and immigrated to USA as a teenager. Gil was baptized at the age of 19 in a Korean-American Presbyterian church. He eventually went to Calvin theological seminary where he met his wife, Joyce (Scholten) from Canada. They moved to Nigeria and taught at a Bible school, in a rural area for six years during which their three children were born.

Gil’s family had to leave Nigeria unexpectedly in 2004 due to tribal violence. Then, he served at a congregation in California USA for four years until they moved to Cambodia in 2008. Gil’s mission focus has been mentoring, training and networking emerging leaders in Cambodia. He is especially passionate about spiritual formation for life long development of leaders. Gil has completed a doctor of intercultural studies on the topic in 2017. He is a founding member of Cambodia Research & Resource Center and a coordinating member of Mission Kampuchea 2021, a national mission movement in Cambodia. He taught at Phnom Penh Bible School and is an associate professor at Cambodia Presbyterian Theological Institute.

Gil and Joyce are both ordained ministers of Christian Reformed Church of North America. Gil serves as the Cambodia field leader of Resonate Global Mission, and Joyce is South/South East Asia regional leader. Their two sons, David and Isaac, are attending college in USA. And daughter, Mary, is a Senior in high school this year. Gil loves playing and watching basketball and table tennis at spare time.
